Sony explains its plans for the next generation of gaming consoles.
In the ongoing spat between Sony and Microsoft, which plays out as part of the UK’s competition authority’s investigation into the takeover of Activision Blizzard, Sony is laying out its plans for the next generation of game consoles.
Activision Blizzard is the company that publishes “Call of Duty” titles, exclusive to Sony Playstation, that were to be acquired by Microsoft. But Sony opposes this acquisition. Because Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard will mean that “Call of Duty” exclusivity will move to Xbox from Microsoft.
Microsoft says it wants to offer the series on Playstation consoles as long as it “makes sense,” and has offered Sony a contract until 2027, but Sony says Microsoft will likely make the series an Xbox exclusive after that.
When Sony releases the next generation of its Playstation console, it will lose access to “Call of Duty” and other Activision games, which could make the next generation Playstation extremely vulnerable to losing consumers.
Sony states that it will take many years and billions of dollars to create a game that can challenge “Call of Duty,” if they have the ability and resources to do so. Sony believes that Electronic Arts’ “Battlefield” series is a sign that it is not working and is likely not going to be successful.
The current generation of Playstation console, Sony’s Playstation 5, came out 2 years ago in 2020. While Playstation 4 was launched 7 years ago in 2013. Which makes it likely that Playstation 6 will be released in 2027 at the earliest but considering the gap The seven-year precedent between Playstation 4 and Playstation 5.
When do you think the Playstation 6 is coming?
