Pimax Portal is an upcoming mobile game console that can also be used to participate in virtual reality experiences. The console was shown off at the recently concluded CES and is currently on sale via a Crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.
The Pimax Portal is equipped with a 5.5 inch LCD or QLED display and has two detachable hand controllers similar to the Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons. The Portal has 8GB of RAM and the LCD version of the console can be had with either 128GB or 256GB of storage, while the QLED variant is only available in the 256GB version. In terms of VR functionality, the idea is to attach the console to something called “Portal View”, a headset reminiscent of those who fell asleep these days Google Cardboard.
An LCD version of Pimax Portal will cost $300 or $400 depending on how much storage you want. The QLED version will cost around $550. If you want the Portal View VR addon, it will cost an extra $50-150 depending on which version of Portal you buy. Then two hand controllers for virtual reality experiences are also included.
In the video above, you can check out Pimax’s visualization of using the Portal as a handheld device, in front of the TV and in VR mode. Before you decide to invest in a Pimax portal, it might be worth reading the UploadVR statement About the console here. Personally, I would wait a bit before buying.
