There is no immediate shortage of different upgrading techniques for games. Nvidia started the trend with its own DLSS method, and AMD and Intel later followed with their FSR and XESS technologies. When it comes to DLSS, the technology has gone through many iterations over the years, with the latest version of DLSS 3 introducing the somewhat controversial feature. Frame generation – A feature that, through machine learning, can interpolate new frames to increase performance in games.
While game support for DLSS 3 has increased dramatically recently, Nvidia intends to speed it up further with a new plugin (eng. Connect in) to the new Unreal Engine 5 game engine. The principle is the same as the company did earlier with DLSS 2, the extension is downloaded and installed in the game engine editing program. With this in place, it should be relatively easy for game developers to add DLSS 3 support to their project.
The plugin also adds support for Nvidia’s easy-to-implement Reflex technology to reduce latency, which is essential if you like to use interpolated frames – as they can significantly increase the perceived latency in games. Then cross interpolation Frame generation It only works on Geforce RTX 4000 series graphics cards, and there’s even the option to add support for DLSS Super Resolution, the classic resolution scaling from DLSS 2.
Anyone wishing to use DLSS 3 in an Unreal Engine 5 project can download the necessary files via Nvidia website. The plugin works out of the box with Unreal Engine 5.2, but there are also instructions on how to install it on older versions of the game engine.
