Dagens Medicin investigated the addresses Hospitals chose to award medical students after nurse assistant became a protected professional title on July 1. A “nursing assistant” ends up at the top of the newspaper’s poll. This title is used, among others, at Capio St.
However, titles may vary depending on which semester the alternative medicine student completed. The paper’s investigation shows that in Skåne one is called a nursing assistant after the sixth semester, a physician’s assistant after the seventh semester, a medical student after the ninth semester, and a “university doctor who is not an ordinary person” after the eleventh semester of the medical programme.
Many other areas use different titles depending on the tasks to be performed, and there are also hospitals that have converted from “Nursing Assistant” to “Nursing Assistant”.
When the newspaper asked the second vice president of the Medical Association, Marina Totma, about the association’s position on the titles, she said that the title should reflect the work performed by the students. And she answered a direct question that, in this regard, perhaps a medical assistant is better than a nursing assistant.
It is important for medical students to perform tasks that will benefit them in their future professional role as a physician. It’s also important that students get increased powers based on how far they have advanced in their education, explains Marina Totma to Dagens Medicin.
