Two crimes occurred in a short time, in Uppsala and Stockholm.
Now police are urging the public to be vigilant.
New fraud attempts are expected.
– Experience is that when this type of crime becomes relevant, many crimes occur in the near future, and this is what they usually look like, the police confirmed in a statement.
This is how crime happens
According to the police, the crimes were likely committed as follows:
– The account card was read when inserted into the payment machine at the gas station.
– The perpetrators installed a reading device on the device. On the keyboard, the scammers placed a small camera the size of a pinhead.
– With the help of the camera, the perpetrator sees the code entered.
“Call 112”
Police are urging the public to pay extra attention to two things when paying at gas stations.
Firstly, customers are asked to check that all equipment is in place when inserting the bank card into the machine. If something is loose, it is a warning sign.
– If something is loose, stop refueling and call the owner and the police on 112, stresses the authority.
Anyone refueling is also asked to make sure there is nothing foreign about the keypad on the device. If you see a hole in the device, it might be a camera hole.
– If you suspect that all is not well with the device, call 112 and report it, writes the police.
400,000 are affected every year
Every year, 400,000 Swedes are affected by card and credit fraud.
The theft of bank cards and ID cards is one of the most common scams in Sweden today, according to security company Vipo.
In skimming cases, the fraudster uses a scanner or mobile app to access card information.
According to Vipo, card users can protect themselves in the following ways:
1- Keep your sensitive information to yourself. Never give out sensitive information such as your Social Security number, account number, or card PIN via email, chat, or SMS. Not even if a friend calls from their real email address. You never know who hacked.
2, Make sure to make online purchases with serious players. Read reviews carefully before shopping online. No matter how serious a page is, it is possible that scammers are running it.
3, Purchase an RFID card. The RFID blocker card is as large as a credit card and protects your cards from wireless skimming. You place the security card in the wallet and it “hides” your card details from fraudsters.
