On the premises of the former Mint Office, the Eskilstuna County Courthouse has acquired, through reconstruction and extension, functional and purposeful premises with more negotiating rooms and increased security. The building’s design is inspired by the city’s industrial heritage.
District Court operations have grown and today there are much higher demands on security, access and representation than before, while the building must be open and welcoming. The new building houses about fifty workplaces and eight meeting rooms, two of which have an increased level of security. tThe district court is also equipped with the latest technology, which provides, among other things, the possibility of video conference calls. With the move to its seat near the railway station, the District Court gets the conspicuous position and dignity it deserves.
The design builds on Eskilstuna’s heritage as an industrial city permeating all the color, material and furniture choices. Great care was taken in all choices and the ambition was to leave no surface untreated.
– In close and well-done collaboration with the house’s architect Ahrbom & Partner, we worked to ensure that it was experienced as a project where the house and the interior do not compete with each other, but rather reinforce each other, says Johan Björkholm, lead interior architect at White Arkitekter.
All the furniture has an expressive and unmistakable simplicity with a variety of materials such as steel, wood and textiles. The Swedish Courts Agency’s goal is to protect Scandinavian design, which fits in well with the concept. The furniture has been tested in close dialogue with the company to be ergonomic and safe and contribute to the impeccable design.
The county courthouse is a public space open to the public and a place of work for court officials, guards, jurors, prosecutors, and attorneys. It is important for visitors to feel safe in a vulnerable position at times, while at the same time it must be safe and effective for the guards and other staff. Through a well-proven, well-developed color scheme on site and in combination with solid materials, conditions are created for an inclusive and safe environment.
