Norwegian Swish is now available in Sweden – we tested it

This is how it works.

The Norwegian equivalent of Swish has been launched in Sweden. You identify yourself with your Swedish bank ID and the money is deducted from your payment card and you’re done. This is how it works.

Now that you, as a Swede, have a Swedish mobile phone number, you can connect to Vipps. It’s the Norwegian equivalent of Swish and opens up a range of different possibilities. In addition to being able to send and receive money to and from Norwegian people and businesses, you can also send it to the rest of the Nordic region.

To get started, you need the Vipps app. You can find it in both Apple App Store And I Google PlayYour account is linked to your Swedish mobile phone number and payment card. At the moment cards from Klarna, Swedbank, Handelsbanken, Länsförsäkringar, OKQ8 or Ikano Bank do not work, but other cards should work and when we try one it works without problems.

To create an account and identify yourself, you can use your usual Swedish bank ID on your mobile phone. Just like Swish, Vipps allows you to pay in stores (in Norway at the time) and to individuals. Unlike Swish, Vipps opens up the possibility of paying to people across the Nordic countries.

Paying another Swede is free up to 5,000 SEK, but paying someone in another Nordic country costs 2% of the amount until the end of October and 4% from November 1.

When you choose to pay someone in another Nordic country, their currency is the one that applies. So they receive the amount in the local currency you enter and you see for yourself directly in the app what it is in Swedish krona before approving the transfer.

Unlike Swish, it is not guaranteed that the payment and amount will be available immediately to the recipient. It depends on the bank being used. You can see directly in the app if the recipient has a Vipps account, and if you see it, you know the payment will go through. However, sometimes it can take up to a business day before the funds are available in the recipient’s account.

You can send money from a large number of payment cards, including for example Eurocard, SEB Kort and Entercard. To be able to receive money, the card still has to come from one of the banks Danske Bank, ICA Banken, Lunar, Nordea, Resurs Bank, Revolut SE, SEB Bank or Bank of Åland. According to its own statement, Vipps is working on making it work with more banks soon.
