The official name of the glacier is Thwaites. With a width of 128 kilometers, it is the widest glacier in the world.
Scientists have dubbed it the “Doomsday Glacier” because of the consequences it would have on sea levels if the glacier melted.
A new research report from the University of California shows that day may come sooner than previously thought.
– It dissolves intensely and quickly, says report author Eric Renault CBS.
It could raise sea level – by 60 cm
According to the report, sea levels could rise by 60 centimeters if the glacier melts.
The research data was collected between March and June 2023, and showed that there was a strong flow of warm water under the glacier.
“We see the water flowing into the glacier, and sometimes it gets stuck deep inside the glacier,” Eric Reneau tells CBS.
According to another author of the report, Christine Dow, sea level rise will affect large parts of the world.
The danger is that we underestimate how quickly the glacier is changing, which will be devastating to coastal communities around the world, she told CBS.
