The number of virus cases in one day has reached a new peak in China, according to official figures.
The spread of the virus has gained new momentum in recent weeks in China, as authorities try to prevent the spread through rapid lockdowns, mass testing and travel restrictions.
According to the health authorities, more than 31,400 new cases were confirmed in the country during the day on Wednesday. Of those, more than 27,500 are said to be asymptomatic.
However, the number is relatively low compared to China’s population of 1.4 billion.
On Wednesday, videos from protests at China’s largest iPhone factory in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou went viral. Employees who, among other things, were prevented from leaving the factory area due to the restrictions imposed on them, had had enough. On Thursday, it was announced that parts of Zhengzhou would be completely locked down.
Residents in central parts of the city cannot leave the area without testing negative for coronavirus and obtaining permission from local authorities. Residents are also being asked to stay at home.
It is also said that the protests were due to the employees not receiving the promised bonuses.
Foxconn, which runs the plant, apologized on Thursday, saying the bonuses disappeared due to a technical error but that all employees would get the money they were promised.
“We apologize for the error in entering the computer system and guarantee that the actual salary is the same as agreed,” a statement from the company read.
