Netflix has launched Play Something shuffle worldwide, letting you quickly and easily press a button when you can’t select what you want to watch and let the streaming service pick something up for you. It’s available on TV versions of the app worldwide starting today, and Netflix is also planning to test it on Android soon.
there was January Netflix also announced that the feature will be launching at some point during the year. The broadcast giant previously called it Shuffle Play.
Netflix chooses what to show based on your past history – so it’s not entirely random. You also have the option to press a button called Play Something Else, which gives you a brand new series or movie, something you are already watching, a series or movie from your Netflix list, a series that you may not have finished from, or a movie that you might want to watch again.
Here’s a trailer showing how the new feature works:
You can access the feature under the profile name within the app, from the 10th row on your Netflix home screen, or from the app’s hub menu. Play Something also supports text-to-speech for subscribers who use screen readers.
Is Shuffle Important To Netflix?
It’s a bit odd that Netflix does this big feature. Sure, it’s totally new to be able to press the button and see what the streaming service will choose for you, but given that the entire app experience is already full of suggestions for things you might like based on your preferences and viewing history, it also doesn’t feel like some major news for us.
We can’t really imagine that we will have to use it too, simply because there is always so much that we actually want to watch on Netflix. There is no risk of running out of content to enjoy.
But it’s still a new way to get more out of your subscription fee – and Netflix wasn’t an easy task to make it work. It looks like it took nine engineers over five work teams to accomplish.
