On Wednesday, the first three episodes of the TV series of defectors from the British royal house were released: Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.
Even before the series premiered, passions erupted in the Swedish and British media, as the former American couple promised to tell all about the dark sides of the British royal house.
– A series like this is not good at all from a PR perspective, says Johan T. Lindwall, editor-in-chief of Svensk Damtidning.
“TV series in a royal atmosphere”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex previously attracted a lot of media attention. Among other things with their criticism of the British royal family and the press, but also because of their well-paid contract with the streaming service Netflix.
With the documentary now premiering, the couple say they want to show their picture of what really happened.
– The British Royal House considers itself the most prestigious royal house, which is why people admire and watch them. It’s a TV series but in a royal setting, says Johan T. Lindwall, editor-in-chief of Svensk Damtidning.
Public prayer can take place
In the first episode of the series, the couple’s love story and the royal family’s reluctance to protect the princely couple, especially Meghan, from the media are discussed.
The royal family itself refused to participate in the series. But according to Johan T Lindwall, the series could have disastrous consequences for the British royal family.
– King Charles would never go so far as to abdicate, but it may happen that he will have to publicly abdicate and ask his son’s pardon.
Is this an important social discussion about racism or is it entertainment?
– This is entertainment interspersed with an important discussion. We must be able to question the monarchy as a state, we must be able to question when there are racist statements and tendencies. It has to be on the table and that’s why this series is so good in so many ways.
