On 2 October 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided that the Swedish Embassy in Lebanon, which for security reasons has been located in Nicosia, Cyprus since 3 August, will resume operations at its location in Beirut again.
In October 2023, the State Department issued the strictest warning for Lebanon. Thus for almost a whole year the Foreign Ministry advised against travel to Lebanon and urged all Swedish citizens in Lebanon to leave the country.
For security reasons, since 3 August 2024, Swedish Embassy staff sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have been working from Cyprus. Throughout, the Embassy provided consular support to Swedish citizens who wanted to leave Lebanon, including through the possibility of consular financial assistance in accordance with regulations for Swedish citizens residing in Sweden who wanted to leave Lebanon by plane but did not have the money for accommodation. ticket. Demand for consular support was low.
There are still commercial flights from Lebanon, but booking pressure is intense. Swedish citizens are still being urged to book plane tickets and leave the country.
Embassy staff are now being transferred to Beirut, so that in light of the escalating situation they can more easily follow the development of events on the ground – along with other countries. The main goal is, in addition to the support already provided, for example, the possibility of consular financial assistance in accordance with the regulations, to prepare to assist Swedish citizens who need a passport to be able to leave Lebanon.
The State Department will return with information about when embassy staff will be on site. The intention is for this to happen soon.
