In the past year, the number of people infected with furunculosis has increased in Värmland. NWT He tells us that eight people fell ill and needed medical attention. It is difficult to assess the number of people who never sought care.
According to Värmland district infection control doctor Anna Skogstam, the outbreak is linked to an increase in the number of rodents.
– It may be due to the year of mourning, Anna Skogstam tells NWT.
infected mouse
Infected rats are found mainly in North Värmland, and there is a previously noted connection to outbuildings and log sheds, where infected rats can seek shelter. When the dust is broken off, it can contain contamination from rodent urine and feces.
– You can breathe in it when cleaning the summer cottage or in the woodshed and inhale the dust. The vulture virus can live for a long time, says Anna Skogstam, so it helps to have good ventilation.
Less rabbits?
At the same time, the number of herpes cases in the county has halved, but there is no relationship between the two diseases, or any explanation for the low incidence of herpes.
– Either not many samples were taken (for example, Harpest, editor’s note) or there are not many rodents in the forest and land that carry the infection, says Anna Skogstam.
lifelong immunity
The offering is fatal to rabbits, but infected humans can be treated with antibiotics. Chopsticks and lyre fever are both notifiable diseases according to the Infection Control Act.
Roe deer fever causes high fever, muscle aches, general malaise, and severe abdominal and back pain. The kidneys are under attack as kidney function declines, and the disease can sometimes cause skin bleeding. Despite the fact that many are seriously ill, almost everyone recovers with only one left. It is reported that the fatality rate is less than one percent and that the infection provides lifelong immunity.
Eagle fever
Mushroom fever is a viral disease spread by wood mice. Closely related viruses (see viral hemorrhagic fevers) are found elsewhere in the world and can cause very serious infections. Compared to these, furunculosis is a fairly mild illness. Dengue is a zoonotic disease, that is, a disease that can be transmitted between animals and humans.
This disease is caused by the pumala virus, commonly known as hantavirus. The reservoir is wood charcoal (Myodes glareolus). An infected mouse, which does not appear to be infected or ill, excretes virus in its saliva, urine, and feces.
protection
There is no vaccine.
To prevent the spread of infection, it is important to consider the following:
- Avoid direct contact with rodents.
- Avoid inhaling dust that may be contaminated with fur secretions.
- When cleaning, you should not use a vacuum cleaner or dry wipe. Instead, spray with a cleaner or disinfectant and then clean with a damp, disposable cloth. Put on gloves and wash your hands well afterward with soap or sanitizer.
- Use gloves when handling feces, dead burrows, or items that often have burrows present, such as firewood.
For added safety, properly used respirators can reduce the risk of airborne transmission.
