Singer Mimicat won the Festival da Canção award with the song “Ai Coração” and will represent Portugal in the Eurovision Song Contest to be held in May in Liverpool, UK.
Mimicat is the stage name of Portuguese singer Marisa Mena, 38, who performed at the Festival da Canção with the song “Ai Coração”. The singer had already participated in one of the semi-finals of the festival in 2001 under the name Izamina.
Mimicat will represent Portugal in the 67th Eurovision Song Contest, the final of which will be held on May 13 in Liverpool, UK. The final match will be preceded by two semi-final matches on May 9 and 11, with Portugal in the first semi-final.
In the regional jury vote, there was a tie between Mimicat and Edmundo Inácio, but in the public vote 12 points went to “Ai Coração”.
In 2022, Portugal participated in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Saudade, Saadade”, written and performed by Maro, and finished in ninth place.
The 2022 Eurovision win went to Ukraine with the song “Stefania” by the Kalush Orchestra group.
Ukraine could have been the host country of the festival this year, but due to the Russian military invasion of the country, the organization decided that the ceremony would be held in Great Britain, in Liverpool.
Portugal first participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1964 and won for the first and only time in 2017 with the song “Amar por dois” performed by Salvador Sobral and composed by Luísa Sobral. After winning, Lisbon hosted the contest the following year.
