Similar results for men and women

The researchers also investigated whether the relationship differed between men and women or according to age, if the person was younger or older than 50. However, the results for the different groups were similar.

– More and more patients are being diagnosed with MC and are wondering about the risks of other diseases. We are pleased to be able to contribute such information, says the final author, prof Jonas F. LudvigsonPediatrician at Orebro University Hospital, Professor at the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Karolinska Institutet.

“Access to longitudinal data on patients with MC, and matched controls, as well as siblings of patients with MC, allows us to calculate the risk of serious complications and also advance the field by taking confounding family-related factors into account,” adds Ludvigsson.

The study was funded by the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm County Council and the National Institute of Health.

Dr. Ludvigsson coordinated a Janssen-funded study on behalf of the Swedish IBD Quality Registry (SWIBREG). Dr. Ludvigson also received financial support from MSD to write an article reviewing national healthcare records in China. Dr. Olin has been a Principal Investigator on projects at Karolinska Institutet funded by grants from Janssen, Pfizer, AbbVie, Takeda and Fring, and Karolinska Institutet has received fees for lecturing and participation on advisory boards from Janssen, Fring, Galapagos, Bristol-Meyer Squibb, Takeda and Pfizer. Dr. Olin also reported on contributions from Pfizer, Galapagos, and Janssen in the context of national pharmacovigilance programs.
