Sarah Lidman’s “The Railroad” Becomes a Musical
Author Sarah Leidman would have turned 100 this year, and now her epic novel ‘Jernbanan’ will be turned into a musical at Västerbottensteatern. The main character, Diedrick Martensson, grapples with his memories in a prison cell. “He feels very angry about the way the rest of Sweden deals with what they call wilderness here,” lead actor Jacob Hultcrantz Hansson tells P1 Kultur reporter Joachim Silverdahl. Come to “Jarban” rehearsals.
Johan Olvesson as Shostakovich – the breakaway hitmaker
Composer Dmitry Dmitrievich Shostakovich was an early 20th century composer who was active in the Soviet Union throughout his life. He obediently bowed to authority, but at the same time he displayed obstinate and secret resistance. Author Julian Barnes’s novel Tidens larm is a portrait of this disconnected man and artist. Now the novel will be performed in the musical theater at Folkoperan in Stockholm with Johan Olvesson in the role of Shostakovich. Jenny Tillmann gets caught in a rehearsal for the song “Tidens larm” – and ends up in the middle of one of Johan Olvesson’s lines about what the dream of freedom could look like.
