The fire destroyed a seven-storey residential building in the Volks-en-Velen district of eastern Lyon. Authorities said the fire broke out at 3 p.m. Friday.
Among the deaths confirmed so far are at least five children. Four people sustained injuries described as critical or life-threatening. Several others were injured.
