Racing driver turned Hedge Fund Manager James Matthews bought his plush Mayfair property for £1.75million aged in his early 20s, selling it for £12.75 million in 2006.
Long before he met Pippa, James lived in a stunning multi million pound house enjoying all the trappings only a young millionaire hedge fund manager could have. The successful financier could spend a day working in the markets and then retreat to his luxury Mayfair seven story “apartment” which had five bedrooms and 21 rooms – DMZ is sure that Matthews must have thrown some fantastic parties in such salubrious London digs!
Matthews featured his bachelor pad in a property magazine aged only 31 in 2006, where he described it as “a bit big for one person.” The property is now said to be worth as much as £40 million.
Grade II-listed, the property was built in the early 20th century by British architect W. D. Caroe, reportedly costing Matthews £1.75 million at the time of purchase.
Decor in the 9,000sqft property included antlers on the walls and a hot tub on the roof top terrace where James revealed he liked to sunbathe when he wasn’t working. Many of the walls were covered in original art and the home even included a huge four poster bed.
Matthews proposed to Middleton in the Lake District in July last year after dating for just a year, although they’ve been friends for more than 10 years. Educated at the prestigious Uppingham School in Rutland where he was a boarder, Mr Matthews eschewed university choosing to pursue a career as a racing driver competing up to Formula 3 level.
He won the British Formula Renault Championship in 1994 for Manor Motorsport, and later that year picked up the Eurocup Formula Renault title. He started his career in finance in 1995 as a derivatives trader at Spear, Leeds & Kellogg, which is now part of Goldman Sachs, before co-founding hedge fund Eden Rock Capital Management in 2001. A jet-setting childhood was spent between Lincolnshire and the Caribbean island of St Barths where his parents moved to after buying the luxury Eden Rock hotel.
At 41, the Chelsea-based multimillionaire is eight years older than Miss Middleton.
Matthews is an ultra-marathon runner in his spare time and in 2008 completed the 156 mile Marathon des Sables. He’s also a keen skier and the couple completed the 54km Birkebeiner ski race in Norway together last year.
The couple are also keen tennis players: Miss Middleton is a regular at Wimbledon and was pictured with Mr Matthews at the championship last year, just days before they became engaged.
Mr Matthews’ brother is reality television star Spencer Matthews. The ex-Etonian and notorious London socialite, 27, shot to fame on the structured reality show Made in Chelsea. Matthews the younger hit the headlines in 2015 after quitting “I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!”, blaming an addiction to steroids in his quest to achieve the perfect physique.
DMZ notes that our newly found married couple are sure to be enjoying even more spectacular digs in the near future!
