Many who have upgraded to Windows 11 have found that both the Start Menu and the taskbar are missing features that were in Windows 10. A year and a half later, features such as the ability to have every application window on the taskbar are still missing, but it soon seems to be it will be changed.
In a major system update this fall, Microsoft plans to reintroduce many of the missing functionality, reports Microsoft Windows latest. The latest Dev Channel build for Windows 11 (build 23440) includes both the option to never merge buttons into the taskbar and show window titles along with icons as before. Both have settings to turn them off and on so that users who prefer the stripped-down interface of Windows 11 can keep them.
The current design is more abstract with only icons.
Another new in the update is the ability to hide the time and date on the right side of the taskbar, which can be especially useful on smaller screens where space is limited. The Windows 11 Fall Update is also expected to bring big news to Windows Explorer, and rumors have spoken of improvements in window auto-docking, a system-wide dark mode, and new fine-tuning of audio volumes for individual programs.
