Judge dismisses Trump indictment over classified documents

The reason for dropping the prosecution is said to be that Jack Smith, who is leading the prosecution, was not appointed properly. So Judge Ellen Cannon, who was nominated by Trump, has now decided to drop the prosecution.

According to Reuters, the Attorney General is likely to appeal the decision soon.

Fouad Yousfi, SVT's correspondent in the United States, described the decision as unexpected.

“This is a decision that few expected, and the attorney general will certainly appeal it to a higher court,” he says.

Attention to the prosecution

Donald Trump was indicted last year after 33 boxes of classified documents were found at his residence. Among other things, the documents were supposed to contain information about the United States’ nuclear weapons program and the defense capabilities of other countries.

The indictment included 37 charges, 31 of which related to suspected crimes against the Espionage Act and six cases of obstructing the investigation.

Trump has always maintained that he is innocent. He has yet to comment on the fact that the case has now been dropped.
