Many other preservatives and biocides are very sensitive if they come in contact with the skin. Many of them are also harmful to the environment. Allergy lasts for life and allergy sufferers should avoid skin contact with the substance to avoid allergic contact dermatitis, which negatively affects ability to work and quality of life.
Strong increase in usage
The purpose of the current study was to increase knowledge of how EU chemical legislation and the use of more problematic preservatives in chemical products have evolved over time, while use in cosmetics is better known. The results show that the use of the most problematic substances has increased very sharply. The study also shows that information regarding preservative content is often missing due to the design of regulations. The only products that today should have an advertisement for the content of preservatives on the packaging are cosmetics and detergents. Some preservatives, most notably isothiazolinone, have caused widespread contact allergy due to their widespread use. So it is often difficult to avoid risky contact and skin diseases. Paint, glue, and putty are examples of products that often contain these harmful chemicals.
