Russia’s Skoltech and MIPT universities have begun investigating the possibility of sending satellites that can display ads in the night sky, something you can see as an example of how it looks in the above illustration.
The idea is to send out about 50 satellites that will reflect sunlight and then be configured to show different advertisements. The idea is that the satellites will be placed in orbit around the Earth so that they can be seen from large cities and other populated areas so that the advertisers’ message can be seen by as many people as possible.
The researchers believe that sending the satellites required to display advertisements from space could cost about $65 million. This is considered a reasonable cost and it is believed that such a project can be profitable. Researcher Shamil Bektimirov at the Skoltech Engineering Center says in a press release:
“We’ve been studying some of the more technical aspects of space advertising for a while now. This time we looked at the economic side of things, and while it might sound unrealistic, we’ve shown that space advertising is based on 50 or more satellites that fly in. Formation is economically feasible. The main concerns are maximizing the overall mission duration and satellite footprint area – the range at which you can reach a ‘pixel’ width that will be part of the image in the sky.”
Polluting the night sky with advertisements sounds like an incredibly dystopian idea. Unfortunately, it is not at all impossible for everything to happen at some point in the future, unless the relevant authorities prohibit such solutions in space. It remains to be seen if this will be the case.
