In memory of Kim Bok

In memory of Kim Bok

Kim’s father was a diplomat, which meant a long stay in other countries. This gave Kim experiences and knowledge that certainly contributed to the development of his great social skills. After his student days in Sigtuna, he studied medicine at Karolinska Institutet. He became a registered physician in 1970, obtained his PhD in 1974 and immediately afterwards became a lecturer in thoracic surgery.

As a medical candidate, he worked as a substitute in the Thoracic Surgery Clinic, Karolinska Hospital, and remained there until 1997 when he moved to Karlskrona to help start the new Thoracic Clinic at Blekinges Hospital.

Over the years, he became one of Viking Professor Olof Björk’s closest collaborators and was the focus around which most things in the Chest Clinic revolved: the operating program, scheduling, and supervision of the young surgeons.

Kim has extensive experience in thoracic surgery, both lung surgery and cardiac surgery, including pediatric cardiac surgery.

He was a technical surgeon and could act quickly in complex surgical situations. Kim was always willing to share his experiences and was always there if us novice surgeons had a problem. He always managed to get that tricky stitch in the right place. Kim always maintained a good mood in the operating room, even in critical moments he was calm and friendly. Our younger colleagues have taught us the importance of hard work, camaraderie and loyalty to the mission, which has been invaluable to our development at work.

In addition to activities in Sweden, he participated as a volunteer in a pediatric heart surgery project in Cambodia, where his knowledge, skill and generous personality were naturally acquired.

Kim was a good doctor who devoted himself to his patients and provided personalized treatment. Patients still come in for return visits after undergoing complex heart surgery as children 30 to 40 years ago and talk about their or their parents’ memories of “Dr. Kim.”

Kim was interested in music, literature, cooking (he was an excellent cook) and the farm in Scania. He can come back after vacation and proudly talk about the responsibility of driving grain transport with tractors and large wagons on the farm.

He did not differentiate between men, but treated everyone equally, whether they were princes or among the people.

We miss Kim and are so grateful for what he means to us.
