He’s the oldest dog in the world — and now he’s being celebrated

The Portuguese dog Bobby is 31 years old. Christmas fell on a Thursday and was celebrated on Saturday with great party – in the traditional Portuguese spirit, owner Lionel Costa said in a statement from the Guinness Book of World Records, which has been cited by, among others. Bobby, a Portuguese Shepherd Dog of the Rafeiro do Alentejo breed, was named the world’s oldest dog in the Guinness Book of Records in February this year. The uproar was great.

“We’ve had a lot of journalists and people from all over the world come to take a picture of Bobby,” says Costa.

“It wasn’t easy for him.”

It also led to fears that it would be too much for the old man and he was recently taken for a check-up – and found to be in good health. However, he has difficulty walking and poor vision due to his advanced age.

The secret to this respectable age, Costa says, is the “quiet, calm environment” that Bobby lives in in rural southern Portugal.

Costa himself was only eight years old when Bobby joined the family.

“Bobby is special, because if you look at him, it’s like remembering the people who were part of our family but unfortunately are no longer there, like my parents, my brother and my grandparents who really left us.”
