Heavy rain moves over eastern and central Europe

A massive rainstorm is moving across several countries in Eastern and Central Europe. The storm is called Boris and in Germany it is called Anette. It formed over the northern Mediterranean and is expected to bring heavy rain. Continuous rain is expected in some places until Sunday.

In eastern Romania, at least five people have been killed, authorities said, according to the Associated Press. Several people were reportedly rescued from their homes in different parts of the country.

Over the weekend, low pressure gathers with its center of gravity over the Czech Republic and Austria with heavy and prolonged rain.

– In the latest weather models, the low pressure is putting on the handbrake and risks lasting through Monday and Tuesday before it melts and the rain stops, says Nils Holmqvist.

In Poland, the southern parts have been the hardest hit so far, with hundreds of residents evacuated and several weather warnings issued. On the Biała Glócholaska river, the water level has risen to two metres above the warning level and there have been heavy flooding. In the town of Jarnołtowiec, rainfall reached 144 mm on Friday. A crisis meeting with relevant authorities in Poland is scheduled for Saturday.

Prepare with barriers

The Czech Republic has also seen heavy rain since Thursday and the highest flood warning has been issued across the country except for western Bohemia.

Among the most affected areas will be the rivers flowing into the mountainous areas in the north-east of the country, below the Jeseniki and Beskidy mountains, as well as the Šumava mountains in the south-west.

For several days, reservoirs have been emptied and barriers have been put up in vulnerable areas. People have been placing sandbags to protect their homes. Czech media believe the rainy weather could cause the worst flooding in 50 years, Czech media reported. Radio Prague International.

The storm is expected to continue over the Alps and Austria. In Germany, the rain is expected to be worst in southeastern Bavaria, where it will continue until Tuesday.
