The Japanese island of Okinawa is famous for its large number of centenarians and its healthy diet and lifestyle. Okinawa is one of the few regions in the world that, because of this, is called the “Blue Zone”. From May 12-13, prominent international researchers and inspirational speakers will gather in Okinawa, to talk about longevity and healthy aging – and what we can learn from the so-called “blue zones”.

– It is an ideal place for interaction, modernization and development in the field of research. World experts in the field of longevity and healthy aging will gather for the review and discuss epidemiology, underlying causes, preventive strategies, treatments and future research directions, says Olle Melander, lead organizer of the symposium on behalf of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Journal of Internal Medicine.

The opening lecture will be given by Professor Makoto Suzuki of the Okinawa Longevity Science Center, founder and lead author of the Okinawa Centennial Study.

The topic of the symposium has become more urgent than ever. The rapid increase in the number of elderly people worldwide inevitably leads to more age-related diseases. One of the greatest challenges of our time It is to promote longevity and healthy aging, reduce suffering from disease and burden the healthcare system, says Olle Melander, professor of internal medicine and cardiovascular disease at Lund University and chief physician at Skåne University Hospital.

The symposium is the so-called Master Symposium – international meetings at the cutting edge of internal medicine research, which are arranged annually by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and International Me.Design.
