You may have come across h.265 listed video files and found that they can’t be played on your computer. Until now, the most popular compression format for video was h.264, but as movies get larger and resolutions increase, h.265 is increasingly being seen.
For example, newer iPhones, some Android phones, and most streaming services use this format. It has stronger and more efficient compression thus producing smaller files and occupying less bandwidth with minimal image quality degradation. H.265 is actually called hevc, which stands for High Efficiency Video Coding, as opposed to h.264, which stands for avc, Advanced Video Coding.

To decode movies in Windows, as you know, a so-called codec is needed that is adapted to the format. Windows 10 and 11 do not include the hevc codec by default. Sure, Microsoft provides one, but it costs money. It’s not a huge amount, you can get it for ten crowns in the Microsoft Store. Just launch the Store app and search HIFK.
But there are free methods as well. One is to use a media player VLC media player. Here are some others.

The above tip works at the time of writing, but it is conceivable that Microsoft will remove this possibility. Then another possibility is to download and install one of the popular codec packs that help play almost every imaginable video format.
