Great Britain: A desperate Boris Johnson pleads before the vote
The vote of no confidence in British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has begun.
It takes place between 19 and 21 Swedish time.
The result will be published afterwards.
The British Prime Minister can be voted on after a sufficient number of MPs from his party (the Conservatives) support a vote of no confidence.
The announcement came after Johnson was under intense pressure for a long time after his engagement was revealed At the Partygate scandal.
Now, it is up to the 359 members of the Conservative Party to decide Johnson’s fate. The prime minister needs 181 votes to stay.
Desperate last call
In a final desperate plea, Boris Johnson tried to reach out to his MPs earlier in the day.
In a letter sent to all members, the prime minister wrote, among other things, that today’s vote is “a golden opportunity to move forward and focus on what really matters,” reports BBC News, which has obtained a copy of the letter.
– We can put an end to the media’s favorite obsession and unify the party, according to the Prime Minister’s statements.
In the letter, Boris Johnson also wrote that a “big prize is on hand” for people who support him in tonight’s vote.
Low support
A new Opinium poll suggests that British support for Boris Johnson has hit rock bottom.
Only 28 percent of British voters want the prime minister to remain in office.
There is broad support for Johnson’s removal from office.
The proportion of Conservative voters who want Johnson to resign stands at 34 percent. In the Social Democratic Labor Party, up to 85 percent of the party’s voters want the prime minister to resign.
