9to5Google reports that Google will no longer push software updates to smart displays from third-party manufacturers that run the Google Assistant. Everything is clear from a short text on Google’s support page for the Google Duo calling service. There it is written:
IMPORTANT: Google no longer provides software updates for its third-party smart displays: Lenovo Smart Display (7″, 8″, and 10″), JBL Link View, and LG Xboom AI ThinQ WK9 Smart Display. This may affect the quality of video calls and meetings.
This means that, for now at least, it will be the only Google Nest Hub that receives new updates and is outfitted with new functionality. It is not clear whether or not Google plans to offer third-party smart display manufacturers a replacement in the future. It was recently rumored that Google has scaled back development of its Google Assistant in favor of AI projects like chatbot Bard. If this is the reason why Google is not offering software updates for smart displays, there is no information yet.
If you have a smart display with Google Assistant from a third party manufacturer, this will continue to work but will no longer receive any new functionality.
