Google has organized something called the “Google Smart Home Developer Summit”. There they talked a bit more about how smart home stuff should play with standard materials and smart home stuff from competing manufacturers.
Dubbed Connected Home over IP (CHIP) when it was introduced nearly two years ago, Matter is a standard that nearly all smart home gadget manufacturers have adhered to. Among those who support Matter, in addition to Google, Apple, Samsung, IKEA, Philips, Amazon and the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) are also among about 200 companies and organizations that have joined Matter so far.
The idea behind Matter is that all smart home things compatible with Matter should be able to work with each other in the smart home and control them from the same app. In practical terms, this means that you can control all Matter-compatible gadgets in your smart home using, for example, the Google Home Assistant or Apple’s Home app, regardless of who made the gadget.
During the Google Smart Home Developer Summit, Google presented a few different development tools that can be used to develop Matter-compatible tools for the smart home, something that is brought together under what Google calls the “Google Home Developer Center”. They have also showcased some new things on Google Home that make it possible to control Matter compatible smart home items.
The substance standard will begin to be implemented in earnest sometime next year. There will also be tools that Google has now proven to do.
