All three remaining nuclear power plants in Germany must continue to operate until at least April 15 next year.

The announcement shreds previous decisions to phase out nuclear power plants by the New Year.

This information comes from a letter that Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote to his government, according to several German media outlets that have read the letter.

“The legal requirements must be established to allow the process to continue,” Schultz wrote.

In September, Economy Minister Robert Habeck of the environmental Green Party suggested that two nuclear power plants could continue operating until April, but Social Democrat Schultz wants to allow all three plants to continue operating due to the risk of an energy crisis.

It is supported by the Liberal Free Democratic Party, which is also part of the government. The party’s finance minister, Christian Lindner, says all three actions are necessary to avoid and prevent outages in the energy supply.

Justice Minister Marco Buschmann, also of the FDP, wrote on Twitter: “Common sense has prevailed. This strengthens our country.”

Decision to decommission nuclear power by the then government coalition between the conservative CDU/CSU party and SPD. The decision was made, among other things, due to the nuclear disaster at Fukushima in Japan in 2011.
