The cellular changes that can lead to cervical cancer are most often caused by a virus, human papillomavirus, human papillomavirus. Now women in Jönköping county born in 1994-1998 get free HPV vaccination and HPV self-testing.
During the period from November 2022 to January 2023, free vaccination is offered to all women in Jönköping county born in 1994-1998, a total of 10,500 women, by mail via 1177.se on Friday 4 November . This is part of a nationwide campaign to eliminate cervical cancer.
This investment is very important to reach an age group that has a lower rate of HPV vaccination. Through vaccination, you get good protection against the virus that can cause cervical cancer, says Anneli Karlin, head of the care unit at the Women’s Health Service in Jönköping.
Book a vaccination for yourself
HPV vaccination is carried out at selected sites throughout the county, by Wetterhälsan Health Care Center and Vårdcentralerna Bra Liv. Those who want to vaccinate choose the right place themselves. All information is available at 1177.se.
Those who choose to be vaccinated will be offered another dose after 3 years.
The offer also applies to those previously vaccinated against HPV, as the latest vaccine offers broader protection than previous vaccines.
Self-test is included in the vaccination
Anyone who chooses to be vaccinated also receives an HPV self-test, which is done at the vaccination site. The answer is available after three to four weeks. If the test result contains HPV, which must be monitored, the woman receives a call to the midwife for a Pap test, 3-4 months after the HPV test.
The national campaign is part of the ongoing research to eradicate cervical cancer.
Anyone who is vaccinated also agrees to be part of research on HPV and cervical cancer led by Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm.
More facts / HPV vaccine
Since 2010, HPV vaccination has been offered to all girls as part of the school vaccination (also boys from 2020), but women born in 1998 and earlier do not have a high vaccination rate. Prior to 2019, an older version of the vaccine was used that did not provide widespread protection. The fact that the show is limited to women born in 1994-1998 is that women born before 1994 are less likely to be affected. Women born after 1998 were vaccinated in the children’s vaccination program, and many were vaccinated at that time.
