The annual Goodwood Festival of Motorsport is now taking place in England. Among other things, the focus is on the “Hill Climb” race, where car manufacturers of all levels of ambition test their creations on a 1,890-metre track with a gradient of 4.9 degrees.
But racing is not the only focus of the festival, which attracts 100,000 visitors annually. Electric cars are also an increasingly important feature of the festival. Many new and upcoming electric cars are on display in the Electric Avenue exhibition area. In a video produced by the festival, we can follow along and see the models on site.
Here you can find, among others, the Rivian R1T, Toyota bZ4x and Renault 5. You can see the feature from Electric Avenue below:
Back to hill climbing
But this race is also exciting! We will also see several electric cars competing on the Hill Climb. Among other things, the plan is for the Polestar 5, Kia EV6 GT, Lucid Air and Rimac Nevera to take to the track during the day. Something we will definitely see clips of in the future once the races are over.
But there are also several electric cars that have already made it onto the track. One of these creations is the most eye-catching of the festival: the Batmobile-inspired McMurtry Speirling. The concept is a single-seater electric supercar that was first shown at last year’s edition of the festival. Now the concept is back to attempt a track record. And it’s fast, as we can see from this weekend’s race in the video below. (to update; Since writing this article, the car has been driven again, and it goes faster – read more about it here)
Another concept, with a completely different design, is the Mercedes EQXX long-distance prototype, which will cover 1,000 kilometers on a single charge. However, in this demonstration, there is no focus on efficiency. Today, Mercedes is pushing the EQXX electric car as hard as it can.
By the way, the Hill Climb record is held by an electric car. It's the Volkswagen ID R race car that completed the stage in 39.9 seconds in 2019.
