There are those who believe that the city’s cultural institutions are standing in its wake. There are others who could care less and create their own underground scene. Thanks to it, now and until the end of April in Landskrona you can get acquainted with one of the most famous artists in Britain. At CAC Bukovje / Landskrona, last Friday an exhibition of works by none other than David Shrigley opened.
Artist pair Connie Blum and Nina Slijko Blum run the transnational institution, CAC (Conceptual Arts Centre), based in Landskrona and Bukovje in Slovenia. In Landskrona, CAC shares space with the family home in Södra Långgatan.
– Since we live in a condo, the opening should be private, ie invite only, but then it’s opened “by appointment” which automatically becomes technically invite only, says Connie Bloom and at the same time starts up a projector in the living room showing the Laundry by David Shringley video.
The short film, only a few minutes long, is a typical example of the British artist’s sharpness and wry sense of humor.
– David Shringley works continually in many different media, but it is perhaps above all through his meticulous drawings and paintings that he has made himself famous outside the art world and established himself as one of Britain’s most successful artists, says Connie Bloom.
How, then, can artists lend their home to an exhibition?
– Maybe it’s about institutions not doing what we want. Then Landskrona appears underground, Connie Bloom says with a wry smile.
In the latest issue of Offside Football magazine, you can take part in the story of Glasgow club’s mascot Patrick Thistle Kingsley, created by David Shringley. UK newspaper The Guardian thought the mascot looked like Lisa Simpson on crack. In an online poll this year, Kingsley came second after being beaten by Arsenal’s mascot.
– It was a spoiled final. Arsenal has millions of fans who can take part in foolish competitions, The artist tells Swedish Football Magazine.
Among others, David Shrigley has had solo exhibitions at Copenhagen Contemporary, Malmö Konsthall, the Baltic Center for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, the Yvon Lambert Gallery in Paris, and the Anton Kern Gallery in New York.
He is also one of the artists commissioned to produce a statue of the fourth base in Trafalgar Square.
At CAC Bukovje/Landskrona, David Shrigley is showing smaller commercial works, in the form of the aforementioned video, and a temporary wall piece, as well as some artists’ books. None of the works are offered for sale.
– David Shrigley exhibits regularly at Galleri Nicolaj Wallner in Copenhagen, where you can purchase original works by the artist, Connie Bloom concludes.
