European Union countries agree on immigration – a historic agreement

During the Swedish presidency, Sweden – led by Immigration Minister Maria Malmer Steinergaard – was the driving force for establishing a new and tougher immigration policy. After years of negotiations, the Cabinet has now reached a landmark agreement on the foundations of a future EU asylum system. A moderate-led government is getting something done.

To regulate immigration policy, we need clear common rules. It has been negotiated for many years and today we are a big step closer to that. A historic agreement was reached under the leadership of Maria Malmer Steinergaard. Before the proposals can take effect, they must be negotiated between the EU Parliament and EU member states. At the beginning of 2024, the Migration Compact is expected to be approved.
