UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will introduce new coronavirus restrictions on Tuesday. He will hold an emergency meeting, speak in Parliament and speak to the nation. The number of infections in the UK is now doubling every seven days.
The London Stock Exchange fell 3.4 per cent on Monday after Health Secretary Matt Hancock warned that Britain had reached a tipping point – that it could now turn very bad if it did not break the spread of infection.
“Right now, we think the epidemic is doubling every seven days, and if it continues, we will have 50,000 new cases every day in mid-October,” Patrick Vallance, the British government’s scientific adviser, told a news conference.
In this case, Vallance added, the UK risks getting more than 200 coronavirus-related deaths per day as of mid-November.
On Monday, the UK reported 4,368 new cases of COVID-19 and 11 new deaths. These numbers are similar to those recorded in early May, when the British were still living under severe restrictions.
Over the summer, the government urged Britons to move again, get out and speed up the economy.
The government wants to avoid the closure at all costs
Authorities have now increased emergency preparedness for covid-19 from level three to level four. Level five means a new shutdown of society and the British government wants to avoid this at all costs.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson held the Cobra Crisis Board meeting to discuss the COVID-19 situation today. Later he will speak in Parliament and in the evening he will deliver a televised address to the nation.

It is already clear that pubs, bars and restaurants in England will close at 10pm from Thursday. They also have to stick to table service.
Corresponding restrictions have already been imposed in parts of northern and central England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are also expected to impose new restrictions soon.
According to media reports, Johnson will also encourage those people to work remotely again who can work from home without any major financial consequences.
Some new restrictions have already been revealed that will take effect in the coming days over the weekend. For example, people in England are threatened with fines of more than £10,000 if they break quarantine rules.
