The latest Viaplay Original from Norway is The Fortress, an ambitious dystopian drama that depicts the dire consequences of Norway’s decision to isolate itself and its citizens from the outside world. Tobias Santelmann (“Exit”; “Kon-Tiki”), Silom Emneto (“Luka and the Magic Theatre”) and British star Russell Tovey (“The Picture of Dorian Gray”; “Quantico”) lead an all-star ensemble of northern and international talent in the series. Parts, which premieres on Viaplay in 2023.
In the year 2037, Norway is surrounded by a massive wall and the residents enjoy a privileged and secure life in a self-sufficient Nordic paradise. But when a deadly pandemic breaks out, the residents realize they are being held captive by the wall that was meant to protect them.
“Fortress” (Norwegian nickname: “Fortress Norway“; Title in English: “The Castle“) by Linn-Jeanethe Kyed (‘Bø’) and author John Kåre Råke (Earthquake“), and directed by Cecily Mosley (Mammon; Grey’s Anatomy) and Mikkel Brænne Sandemose (Lyckolandet).
Tobias Santelmann: “Cecilie has directed most of the scenes in which my character appears, and she is talented, generous and observant. My experience is that Mikel and Cecilie respect each other, get along and complement each other well. The situation in the world today makes ‘The Fortress’ seem uncomfortably modern” .
Philippa Walstham, Chief Content Officer, NENT Group: “The upcoming Norwegian version of the original Viaplay may be set 15 years in the future, but is relevant to viewers everywhere today. History shows us time and time again that what begins as a wall ends as a prison. This unique production And Gravity is the latest example of Viaplay’s commitment to Nordic storytelling that pushes boundaries – in this case, literally.”
The series is produced by Synnøve Hørsdal and Ales Ree for Maipo Film and executive-produced by Kari Moen Kristiansen for Viaplay. Filming is currently taking place in Bergen. “The Fortress” is distributed worldwide by TrustNordisk.
