The painting is in the possession of a 60-year-old colored person in Newcastle. kempton ponton (Jim Broadbent) is an optimistic playwright who moves from job to job. He often steps in to help his fellow humans, which gets him into trouble.
Bunton does not want to pay the TV license. One reason is principled, the other is that he believes poor pensioners and ex-servicemen should not pay. His campaign for a free television license leads to his imprisonment. When he gets out, he promises to his increasingly weary wife (Helen Mirren) to stop. But something happens that makes him want to help again.
Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren are very good in the main roles, and around them there are a lot of outstanding British professionals. The story is told with a light hand Roger Michelle (“Notting Hill”, “Venus”, “The Wrath of Love”), who died before the release of “The Duke”.
Essentially, the feature film tells the true story, although the real-life drama unfolds over several years. A warm portrait of a poor class fighter who believes in the good in people. It was recorded recently, but is reminiscent of classic Ealing comedies of the 50’s and 60’s.
“The Duke” is available for streaming on services such as iTunes.
