Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky officially signed it last week Ukraine application on joining the European Union. Since then the issue has been quickly dealt with in the Council of Ministers, which at the beginning of the week gave the European Commission the task of investigating the issue further.
At the Versailles summit, EU leaders will debate whether Ukraine should be granted candidate country status – an issue that divides member states.
Many eastern EU countries want to push for a speedy process for Ukraine’s request, while others, such as Denmark and the Netherlands, are backing away.
Sweden also has a wait-and-see attitude.
– From the Swedish side, we support Ukraine’s reform efforts and approach to the EU, but we also need to preserve the system that applies to countries that want to become EU members, Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said at a meeting on Wednesday of the Riksdag parliament. Pre-Summit Committee.
According to Magdalena Anderson, it is good that Ukraine’s membership application will be quickly transferred from the Council of Ministers to the EU Commission, which will conduct a major investigation of how the membership negotiations began.
– We believe that opportunities for cooperation and political rapprochement with Ukraine should be investigated outside the membership negotiation process itself, she said.
Before the summit, Magdalena Anderson believes it is important for the EU to come up with something that will give Ukraine a clear signal that the country belongs to Europe. There have been intense discussions about exactly what forms – through in-depth collaborations in one or more areas or some other form of marking according to Anderson.
– It is my firm opinion that they need to hear and feel that we are on their side and that we are there. But she says it is important not to bring any hopes to Ukraine that we cannot live up to.
