Postnord electronic pressure gauge For the full year 2022, which was released in February, it shows that e-commerce fell by 7 percent compared to the previous year and total turnover fell at SEK 136 billion. This is the first time since the measurement began in 2006 that the electronic scale has shown negative growth. Lars Persson, Nordic Sales Manager at Descartes, comments on the report from a transport and logistics perspective.
Together with HUI Research, Postnord continues to develop Swedish e-commerce retail. The Electronic Barometer Annual Report 2022 is based on information collected from retail companies in January 2023. A total of 191 companies selling goods online participated in the survey. Consumer results are based on 12 monthly surveys with just over 1,200 respondents on each survey occasion (a total of approximately 15,000 respondents).
– The electronic metric for the whole of 2022 indicates that society and e-commerce are facing difficult times, which increases the importance of looking ahead. In difficult economic times and tough competition, it is important for companies to ensure the quality of the entire sales process and then the delivery as well. The annual report shows that more and more people are getting the opportunity to choose a delivery method when buying online, and companies have also realized that clear communication about the delivery process results in happier customers, says Lars Persson.
Every third foreign purchase is made from Germany
The annual report shows that nearly 10 percent of respondents have done online shopping from abroad in the past month. Most purchases are made from Germany, China is second in the list, and Great Britain is third. But the country that has become more popular in terms of e-commerce in recent years is Denmark, which comes in at fourth place with 10 percent of e-commerce taking place outside Sweden’s borders.
Cross-border e-commerce is also important for internal trade. For foreign trade to continue to be strong, it is important for companies to improve their logistics and have an efficient and modern customs system. Otherwise, Swedish companies risk being left behind, says Lars Persson, Nordic sales manager at Descartes.
