We used statistical methods to associate ischemic heart disease at the start of the study with an increased risk of dementia and a faster rate of cognitive change during the follow-up period, explains Chengxuan Qiuin the Department of Neurobiology, Health Sciences, and Society, Division of the Aging Research Center (ARC) and one of the study’s authors.
Exploring cognitive processes
Future studies should explore the cognitive pathway after the onset of ischemic heart disease and further investigate the extent to which medical treatments for the disease affect cognitive decline and the onset of dementia.
The SNAC-K project, which forms the basis of this study, is supported by the Ministry of Social Affairs. This study received additional funding from the Swedish Research Council, FORTE and STINT.
