Committee voted: Forcing Trump to testify about the storming of the Capitol

“We need to get sworn testimony from the key players on January 6,” said Republican Representative Liz Cheney, the committee’s vice chair.

Federal law states that failure to comply with a congressional order on testimony or documents is a felony, punishable by one to twelve months in prison. If the order is ignored, the House of Representatives must vote on whether to forward the referral to the Department of Justice, which in turn has the power to decide whether or not to prosecute.

The seven House committee members of Democrats and two Republicans voted 9-0 on the issue.

Trump is expected to oppose the order, but has yet to comment.

The commission has been investigating the attack – which wounded more than 140 police officers and led to several deaths – more than a year ago. More than 1,500 witness interviews have been conducted and countless documents have been obtained. In addition, a thorough investigation was conducted into Trump’s activities from his defeat in the last US elections in November 2020 until the Capitol attack.
