Comment: Biden goes on a difficult visit to Germany

The United States is Germany's most important foreign policy ally. If it is Trump who will be sitting in the White House from the end of January next year, Berlin has a difficult period ahead of it. Among other things, things went very well with the official visit that Biden was scheduled to make, according to plans, in Berlin a week or so ago. This was the first American state visit to Germany since Reagan visited Berlin in 1987 and shouted: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are also scheduled to visit Berlin. Ahead of the meeting, rumors circulated in Berlin, Brussels and Kiev that a major decision was on the way for Ukraine. Zelensky carefully toured both the United States and the European Union with his so-called Victory Plan during the fall and managed to raise expectations for it. But specifically, the plan does not contain anything new, it is the same request that Ukraine has made before: more weapons, the right to use long-range weapons against targets inside Russia, and an unconditional invitation to NATO.

The plan has so far It received a lukewarm reception. There is no indication that the meeting in Berlin will change this. Meanwhile, Russia continues to slowly but surely control more territory in Donbas. Time is not on Ukraine's side.
