The analyst tracks how CoD will impact Game Pass.
Released today Call of Duty: Black Ops 6And this year cod It comes on the heels of Microsoft's Activision Blizzard deal with big news: Game Pass. Already from day one (aka TODAY) you can play Black ops 6 Via the subscription service instead of purchasing the game. For example, if you only plan to run the campaign, it's obviously a good idea to go this route.
Many analysts are talking Gamesindustry.biz It could mean more millions of subscribers. Wedbush's Michael Pachter believes there will be between three and four million new (or returning) subscribers, but also that the game will sell up to six million fewer copies.
The last time Microsoft announced the number of Game Pass subscribers (February), the total number was 34 million.
Ampere's Piers Harding-Rolls doesn't believe in a big increase, as he agreed to a 10 percent increase for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers (about 2.5 million). He believes a large portion will come from those who upgrade from the lower tiers of Game Pass; “Standard” and “Basic”. He adds:
There's no doubt that adding the latest version of Call of Duty will be expensive for Microsoft, at least initially. But Call of Duty is increasingly becoming a primarily live service game, largely monetized in-game. Microsoft will trade premium sales of the entire game to a larger audience that can instead generate revenue through in-game purchases.
Currently, we do not know exactly how the winds of change will blow. Notably, Microsoft has removed the two-week Game Pass test for 10 SEK. This has also been done before Starfield.
