Ubisoft has unexpectedly revealed that a new game in the classic Heroes of Might and Magic series is in development, and is set to launch in Q2 2025, if all goes well.
The series has been on a bit of a rollercoaster in recent years. Following 2006's popular Heroes of Might and Magic 5 came two games that partly departed from the classic formula of exploration on a 2D map and battles in a separate tactical setting. Heroes of Might and Magic 6 and 7 both received mixed reviews, with Metacritic scores of 77 out of 100 and 67 out of 100 respectively.
The new game is called Heroes of Might and Magic Olden Era, and both the name and the first trailer reveal that Ubisoft is returning to the series' classic map. But the game also has new elements.
Battles take place on a hexagonal grid with 3D characters and a perspective that makes it look like a miniature game. The developers at Unfrozen Studio have put a lot of effort into making the battles look great using colorful effects.
The game will feature a campaign mode as well as individual maps, both hand-created and created. Players can play alone or together, in both co-op and player-versus-player modes. A map editor is also included, so players can create and share their own challenging maps and campaigns.
