Several news agencies, citing government sources, reported that the German government has given the green light for partial Chinese ownership of a container terminal in the port of Hamburg.
The decision on the controversial deal is said to have been taken at a cabinet meeting in Berlin on Wednesday morning. Chinese state group Cosco is now allowed to buy 24.9 percent of the terminal, which is part of the HHLA port and logistics group — a slightly smaller stake than previously discussed.
A long line of heavy objects warned China against entering the port, one of the largest in Europe.
The German Ministry of the Interior, Foreign Affairs, Defense, Finance and Economic Affairs discouraged the action, as did the BFV, the BND foreign intelligence service and the European Commission.
German Chancellor Olaf Schulzwho had previously been mayor of Hamburg, was unaffected by this.
Protecting Europe’s critical infrastructure was a talking point at last week’s EU summit in Brussels.
