In his latest Telegram post, the pro-Putin Kadyrov – who ruled Chechnya with an iron fist for 15 years – said that he had found out that another regional leader had been in office for 27 years, so he “decided to break this record”.
“I have absolutely no right to quit. I have been entrusted by the people to lead the district, and it is my sacred duty to live up to that trust.”
On Saturday, Kadyrov apparently said in a video that he was satisfied with his happiness that he realized that he had been in office for so long and that he “deserves an indefinite long vacation.”
I spoke to Putin
According to Radio Free Europe, this announcement sparked speculation that the Chechen leader actually wanted something from Russian President Vladimir Putin. Apparently the two of them had spoken to each other now. Russia’s Interfax news agency reported that Putin called Kadyrov on Tuesday to “congratulate him and all Chechnya” on the centenary of the sub-republic.
Chechnya is an autonomous Russian republic. For years, Russian and international human rights organizations have accused Ramzan Kadyrov of being behind grave violations against his people, including kidnappings, torture, extrajudicial executions and persecution of homosexuals.
