We have received indications from the Dementia Association of Jävle that care for younger dementia patients is seriously neglected here, and there seems to be a lack of insight into how this group differs from older people with dementia. For example, no nursing home specifically targets younger people with dementia who can no longer live at home, but those may move into the dementia wards of nursing homes if they have care needs that cannot be met at home. Needless to say, this is not a good solution for someone who is still physically active and needs to maintain and possibly develop social contacts and interests for as long as possible.
Even in difficult times financially, it should be possible to save money for care and welfare to work so that people get the care they need.
In order to meet the needs of young people with dementia, we must ensure that the right decisions are made. It should never be a matter of arbitrariness or personal ‘opinion’, and decisions should be based on available medical evidence. It is important that everyone affected by the decisions feels safe that a valid professional assessment has been made and that the decisions made lead to the addition of appropriate resources.
