Brajdgatskogen will become a new protectorate and Hejnum Kallgate will become larger

Brajdgatskogen is a forested area southeast of Pal Church. Mostly spruce bog forests and healthy coniferous forests with spruces and pines grow here. There are also a large number of deciduous trees in the area such as birch, ash, holm oak, and forest oak.

– Brajdgat Forest is a very special and unusual forest for Gotland, very rich in species. In the soil layer, unusual sedge grass and valuable black-green mushrooms grow. But what makes the area stand out a bit more is the rich lichen vegetation. There are as many as 14 red-listed lichens here that live on deciduous trees. Two of them are in grave danger, says conservation officer Elena Ambiornsson.

If you take a look at the historical maps, you will see that the area consists of ancient grassland forest. It can also be seen in the remains found in the area. In the northwest part there is a section of an ancient road and three tombs from the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. In the south-east is another part of a medieval road, and it is this road, Brajdgate, that gives the area its name.

“The forest of Brajdgat is reminiscent of a fairytale forest, with old fir trees on the high bases, large deciduous trees and ivy winding its way over the trees and the ground,” says Elena Ambiornsson.

For those who are used to making their way through challenging terrains and at the same time experiencing a forest unique to Jutland, Brajdgat Forest is well worth a visit.
