On Friday, a Brazilian Supreme Court judge announced the approval of the former attorney general’s request to include former President Jair Polosonaro in the ongoing investigation into the storming of the Supreme Court, Congress and the presidential palace in Brasilia.
The attorney general requested that Bolsonaro be investigated by the Supreme Court, referring to a video that Bolsonaro posted “questioning the validity of the 2022 presidential elections.”
The video was published two days after a violent storming of the presidential palace, the Supreme Court and the Congress in the capital, Brasilia.
Although the video emerged after the break-in, the prosecutor believes it could serve as an “evidential link” justifying “a global investigation into the actions carried out by the defendants before and after January 8, 2023.”
The Brazilian authorities have launched an investigation into who or what made it possible for Bolsonaro’s radical supporters to storm the Supreme Court, the Congress and the presidential palace. The authorities are also investigating who or who was responsible for gathering the protesters into the capital, paying for the transportation and any security personnel who stepped aside rather than stopping the storms.
Thousands of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro gathered on Sunday, January 8, in Praca dos Tres Poderes, where the Congress building, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court of Brazil are located.
Protesters broke through barriers, smashed windows and entered buildings.
Rioters were shot with tear gas, rubber bullets and stun grenades by police on the ground and from helicopters.
Two hours later, the police regained control of the buildings.
